The above pictures show the two main ways of collecting a stallion. The first is collecting off of a mare and the second is off of a phantom. There is a third method which is not pictured here, which is from the ground. Someone either holds or you cross-tie the stallion to collect him. Collecting off a phantom is BY FAR the preferred method. (So much so, that I charge an extra $25 to collect off a mare or the ground). By having a phantom to use, the stallion has a stable support for his body which makes it much easier and safer for the person doing the collecting. When you collect off a mare, you always are taking a chance and getting kicked or accidentally stepped on by the mare. And collecting off the ground is just awkward for everybody and can teach the stallion bad habits.
